This video is the story of a partnership between Michael Nielson, Grounds Operation Manager, Department of General Services (DGS), Paula Peper (Historic State Capitol Commission), and Abbey Hart and Taylor Lewis (UC Davis Arboretum) to locate and grow replacement stock for Capitol Park. During the most recent drought, over 10 percent of the park’s older trees failed. This project was launched in 2017 in an effort to maintain the arboretum quality of the park, which provides a multitude of visitors with shade, beauty and pride. The California State Capitol has the only capitol grounds in the nation to be home to an arboretum of trees from throughout the world.
